Free workshop for kiwi bird listeners

Two workshops are set to run across the Bay of Islands to help Northlanders learn more about the call of the kiwi.

The free training workshops are being hosted by the Department of Conservation (DoC) and will run this weekend – at Haratu Marae in Russell on Saturday and Waimate North Sunday School Hall on Sunday.

The events are being run to encourage more kiwi listeners, as kiwi call counts can help with population estimations.

Organisers say that kiwi listeners will learn the nighttime call, the difference between the male and female calls, as well as how to record it and also, how to identify a possum scream from a morepork/ruru call.

Steve McManus and his kiwi dog will be present and will be passing on knowledge from more than 20 years of kiwi listening.
Anyone interested in taking part in the kiwi listening workshops, which both run from 1pm to 3pm, can call DoC on 09 407 0300.
