International Day of Families celebrates diversity
The diversity of Whangarei families will be celebrated this weekend when the International Day of Families takes place at Forum North.
The fifth annual event will run on Saturday, May 19 from 11am to 2pm and is part of a global celebration recognising the importance the international community and families.
Organised by Multicultural Whangarei, the family event will feature entertainment from an interactive circus, karate demonstrations, Pacific Island dancers, salsa dancing, a Korean and a Chinese performance, as well as food stalls.
“We live in a culturally diverse community and it is a chance to join together to celebrate and learn a little bit about the many cultures in our community,” says Multicultural Whangarei centre manager, Jessie Manney.
“People who attend the event are often up dancing with the entertainers. It’s a very interactive event that brings smiles to the faces of everyone who attends,” she says.
There are many organisations from around the community participating on the day by providing activities for the crowds. These activities include face painting, henna, spin art and lots of new activities this year.
“We are hoping to see at least 800 people over the course of the day,” says Jesse.
Entry into the event is by koha.
